Understanding the Biophysical Profile (BPP): A Guide for Moms

Pregnancy is an exciting and transformative time, but it’s also natural to have concerns about your baby’s health. For moms experiencing high-risk pregnancies or needing extra reassurance, a Biophysical Profile (BPP) can provide valuable insights into your baby’s well-being. Here, we’ll explain what a BPP is, why it’s done, and how doulas and midwives can support you through the process with care and resources.

What Is a Biophysical Profile?

A Biophysical Profile (BPP) is a prenatal test used to assess your baby’s health, typically in the third trimester. The test combines an ultrasound and a non-stress test (NST) to evaluate key indicators of fetal well-being. These include:

  1. Fetal Breathing Movements: Ensures your baby is practicing breathing, which is important for lung development.

  2. Fetal Movement: Monitors how often your baby moves to assess activity levels.

  3. Fetal Tone: Checks for muscle tone, such as the baby’s ability to flex and extend.

  4. Amniotic Fluid Volume: Measures the amount of amniotic fluid, which can indicate how well the baby’s kidneys are functioning.

  5. Reactive Fetal Heart Rate: Evaluates how your baby’s heart rate responds to movements.

Each of these areas is scored, providing an overall picture of your baby’s health. Scores range from 8 to 10 (normal), 6 (may need follow-up), to 4 or lower (may require immediate attention).

Why Might You Need a BPP?

Your healthcare provider may recommend a BPP if:

  • You have a high-risk pregnancy due to conditions like diabetes, preeclampsia, or hypertension.

  • You are carrying multiples.

  • You are past your due date.

  • There are concerns about your baby’s growth or activity levels.

The test is non-invasive and provides critical information to help ensure your baby’s safety and well-being.

What Are the Benefits and Risks?

Benefits:

  • Offers a comprehensive assessment of your baby’s health.

  • Helps detect complications early, allowing for timely interventions.

  • Is non-invasive and safe for both mom and baby.

Risks:

  • May lead to false-positive or false-negative results, causing unnecessary anxiety or delaying needed care.

  • Can be stressful for moms if results indicate potential issues.
